A Slow Food Open Hearth
Slow Food Boulder's Annual Members Meeting
was held at The Depot with members bringing
favorite prepared dishes along with
a favorite Slow Food event idea for the New Year.
Great food was enjoyed by all, but of course!
Paul and Ann Cure talked about Hedgerow Farm and their new venture
with details at their new web site www.cureorganicfarm.com.
Jim Schott and Eric Wallace shared their words, pictures and emotions
about their trip to Terra Madre which prompted some great discussions.
It was really a convivial evening!

Andy Floyd,
Director of Professional Programs at the school,
talked about some of the culinary regions of Spain
and prepared tapas for which Spain is famous.
Tastings of saffron, almonds, peppers, and cheeses
and all will be accompanied by wines and sherries
typical of the regions.

A Tour of The Savory Spice Shop in Denver

Mike Johnston, owner of Savory Spice, hosted
a special evening for us where we were given a tour,
Mike talked to us about all the spices, herbs and extracts
he carries and offered many tastes
along with a bag of spices to take home.

This is an amazing spice store filled with more than your average spices.
There are spices in Mike's store that will truly knock your socks off!!
He's got fennel pollen, cinnamon from all over the world,
chili powders from more than 10 kinds of peppers,
Szechwan peppercorns, rose petals as well as blends that cover Mexican,
Caribbean, Indian, Thai, Chinese, European and other cuisines.

Convivium a Casa events are small,
member-only events at convivium member homes.
Donna Fellman hosted our first official Convivium a Casa.
She is a Slow Food Boulder member and is a tea buyer, consultant, educator and
author of the book - Tea Here Now (coming out in October 2005).
Donna has been studying Japanese tea ceremony with
the Urasenke Foundation since 1997 in Boulder, Sante Fe and Seattle.
An introduction to the Japanese tea ceremony and the kaiseki meal -
discussion with Japanese tea and snacks served.
Japanese tea ceremony which included authentic Japanese sweets
served with a bowl of matcha.
The event concluded with sake.

Mateo Spring Dinner & Wine
Tasting
Matthew
Jansen, Bobby Stuckey, Lachlan Patterson and Nate Ready, from
Mateo hosted our Spring dinner. Bobby Stuckey, former sommelier at
The French Laundry, as well as Lachlan and Nate, also formerly of
The French Laundry, joined with Matthew to produce this
wonderful evening filled with great food and camaraderie.

We were among the first to celebrate the season at the new space
Upstairs at The Kitchen with an exquisitely served tasting menu.
Wines were provided by John Salamansky of CS Wine Imports !
a small, quality-oriented, and imaginative chocolatier
introduced samples of his beautiful chocolates and donated a box for the drawing
which accompanied Secret Santa gifts.

The
former chef and master sommelier of California’s famed French Laundry,
Lachlan Patterson and Bobby Stuckey, held a wine dinner featuring
Colorado-grown produce and food products and paired with
wines from Robert Sinskey Vineyards!
Chefs Don Gragg and Matthew Jansen of Mateo,
also participated in the dinner preparations. John Long, Ann Cure, and Wyatt
Barnes
each talked about their agricultural roles in growing the foods that were
prepared.

Slow Food Boulder's Annual Harvest Fund Raiser
A convivial celebration
of the summer's bounty was held at The Kitchen
hosted by chef-owners Kimbal Musk and Hugo Matheson.
The menu was created around locally grown products and
featured organic wines.
10% of the proceeds from the event benefited ¡Cultiva!

Heritage Turkey Tasting
Held
The Culinary School of the Rockies
a grand time was had by all again
when Jim Sorenson of Shanaroba Farm in Carbondale
brought his Heritage & Rare Breed Turkeys to our popular annual Turkey
& Wine Tasting.
Jim's turkeys were roasted along with the familiar Butterball. Wines selected
by Organic Vintner
were tasted and selected to compliment Thanksgiving menus.
Elizabeth Perreault, instructor at CSR, in addition to roasting the birds,
again prepared additional side dishes and a delicious Pumpkin Spice Cake for
all to enjoy.
Recipes for cooking and carving turkeys.

Slow Food Ark Shanaroba Farm in Carbondale.
A Bourbon Red, Narragansett,
Black Spanish, Blue Slate
and Bronze were compared to a Butterball.
Accompanied
by American wines selected by Sally Mohr,
Master Sommelier from Boulder Wine
Merchant.

Annual Harvest Dinner at Treppeda’s Gourmet Market Café
Local,
organic, sustainable,
and artisan foods and wines from Colorado
including
Colorado lamb. Forty percent of the proceeds went
to ¡Cultiva!, a
youth operated organic garden project.
