The events are open to members only and an example is the recent Ravioli Class hosted by Wendy Sollod on April 12th. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver returns with her first nonfiction narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat. With characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Their good-humored search yields surprising discoveries about turkey sex life and overly zealous zucchini plants, en route to a food culture that's better for the neighborhood and also better on the table. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life and diversified farms at the center of the American diet. But beware, after reading the book, you may just morph from a CSA member or farmer's market shopper into a backyard gardener, bread baker, cheese maker, and/or farm animal caretaker.

Casa
Convivium a Casa...
Make Homemade Ravioli with Wendy Sollod

Saturday, April 12 . 3 to 6
Convivium a Casa events are open to Slow Food members only

A grand time was had by all who attended Wendy's authentic Italian raviolis class. We drank wine while enjoying eating the raviolis and homemade sauce, made by everyone. And went home with the recipe, extra raviolis and great memories!
This is the recipe of my Great-grandmother Anna Maria Palange (nee Cefferati - or so my mom promises!) She was born near Naples and came to the US in the 1880's when she was 12 or so. My mother grew up with her grandparents in the house. This is an egg pasta (and we'll use eggs from my neighbor's happy chickens) with a meat filling. And a rumor was heard that Wendy might like to do this again for htose who missed the day!

Slow Food Reads – The Beauty of Butter
Sunday, June 22 4 to 7
Open to Slow Food members only...

Butter. That’s the title of the March issue of Saveur magazine, the topic of The Great Big Butter Cookbook (von Glahn, ed.), and a favorite ingredient of Julia Child’s.
What: SlowFood Reads and Butter Extravaganza
Who: Karen Dunivan
When: Sunday, the 22nd of June, which is National Dairy Month. From 4 to 7pm.
Where: Karen’s house in Arvada
Why: To celebrate the return of Butter (if you ever gave it up)
·         Learn how to make butter in Karen’s butter making workshop (she even has a churn!)
·         Experience many butters in our butter tasting
·         Enjoy butter in every form, from flavored spreads to baked goods, to sauces, to main courses at the potluck
Details: Read anything and everything you can about butter. Bring a stick of unflavored butter (Your favorite? Most unusual? The one with the prettiest label?) for the butter tasting. Then make something that is better because of butter and bring it to Karen’s house. It can be anything from flavored spreads to baked goods, to sauces, to main courses. It's up to you.

Again Our Annual Member's Meeting was Great!
Sunday, January 28th, 5 pm at The Culinary School of the Rockies
Our Annual Members' Only Meeting was a grand success with the largest turnout ever! A potluck was enjoyed by all and Anne and Paul Cure and Chloe Diegel, of Cure Organic Farm, who have recently returned from Terra Madre, spoke of their experiences at Terra Madre as an amazing gathering of people from all over the world.....a larger country representation than the United Nations. With luck on his side Blaise Stephanus won a FREE year's membership to Slow! And the most important intention of the meeting was to hear from the membership which brought forth several ideas and mergers of talent and future projects for our convivium.

Beer and Cheese Tasting
You think wine and cheese is a match made in heaven? Then you really haven't given a fair taste to beer and cheese pairings. These are much more harmonious than the traditional wine and cheese way of thinking.

We gathered in the afternoon for a guided tasting of local beers and artisan cheeses. Justin Trosclair, a cheesemaker at Haystack Goat Dairy, spoke about the variety of cheeses presented and Jim Homer, certified beer judge, home brewer and Slow member, spoke about the local beers to be tasted. Each attendee received an American Craft Beer and Food Guide from the Brewers Association. Tthe day was completed with stout brownie sundaes!

Slow on the Planet
September 28th through 30th
A Renaissance of Local!

Slow Planet
"We can no longer import our lives in the form of food, fuel and fundamentalism. Life is homegrown, always has been. So is culture. And so too are the solutions to global problems."
– Paul Hawken

We are pleased to announce A RENAISSANCE OF LOCAL!, our major event to be held Sept. 28-30 at the beautiful Planet Bluegrass site in Lyons. This will be a county-wide community festival, conference and expo, the first of an annual tradition, providing opportunities for involvement for local citizens, organizations, and businesses. The entire event will be an uplifting celebration of local food, local energy, local economy, local culture and local community, serving as an energizing focus and catalyst for the BOULDER COUNTY GOING LOCAL! Campaign for building community self-sufficiency and strengthening the local economy through partnership, collaboration and engagement. We're anticipating that 1,500 people will participate during the three days.

SLOW ON THE PLANET (presented by Slow Food Boulder, noon - 5:00 p.m., Sept. 30)

  • An extraordinary harvest gathering of local farmers, food purveyors, restaurateurs, and wine producers who believe in supporting local sustainable food, offering culinary pleasure with awareness and sustainability.
  • Talks and demonstrations by cheese makers, bee keepers, permaculture experts, greenhouse builders and wine makers.
  • A SLOW FOOD FEAST featuring the finest Colorado/locally-grown food paired with organic and biodynamic wines, served community-style on what may be the world's longest banquet table.
  • Plein Aire Art show celebrating the beauty of autumn in Colorado.
  • A portion of proceeds will be donated to ¡Cultiva!, a Boulder-based youth-operated organic market garden.

Slow Food Boulder Reads
Every other month Slow Food Reads will gather for just that – the meeting of culinary-inspired minds
for discussion of food-centric books while we feast from its pages. So all you have to do is get a copy
of the book (recommendations: if not the locally owned bookstore of your choice, the Public Radio Boo
kSource, where your order helps support public radio) and read it with gusto Our next meeting will be
in October when Donna Fellman will host the event and will be announcing the book soon. After reading
the book for that month, select a recipe you want to make, e-mail your Convivium a Casa/Slow Food
Reads hostess, and if you are the first to claim it, it’s yours to make and bring along to share. Prior
arrangements can be mad to cook at her house, use the oven, etc. and even in some cases, it may be
appropriate to have a few people gather early and cook together to share larger, more complicated recipes
with the others.

Slow Food Boulder Reads
If you love reading novels where recipes tell part of the story;
memoirs where the ingredients of life and favorite foods are carefully
measured and combined; and travelogues that bring the kitchens
of the world into yours, you’re going to love Slow Food Reads!
Every other month Slow Food Reads will gather for just that –
the meeting of culinary-inspired minds for discussion of food-centric
books while we feast from its pages.

We read: "Salt" – A World History, by Mark Kurlansky.
We had a grand afternoon, tasting salts of many varieties....and selecting our favorites.....and then partaking
of foods which were brought to mind while reading the book, along with a little wine. The conversation was
lively and we all agreed w liked the author and his thorough treatment of the subject. We decided to read
another of his books in April, "The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation", in preparation for
the visit from Basques to share their foods, wines and history in Denver, Boulder and Vail next summer.

Revisiting Our Turkey Tasting
at
The Culinary School of The Rockies
We again roasted off several different turkeys for comparison.
This year we had a turkey raised by David and Priscilla Queen,
a "Traditional" turkey where the white and dark
meat are rich and flavorful, the kind of meat Americans enjoyed
from colonial days through the 1950’s.

Frank Reese's Good Shepherd Ranch has made a major donation to our event
and we tasted their Heritage turkeys...The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy
recently recognized Frank Reese, Jr. as one of four leaders who has contributed
most significantly to the conservation of heritage turkeys.
